This policy explains what data the SafeKids app uses, where it is stored, who can see it and how to delete it. It is written under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679, "GDPR") and also applies to users outside the European Union.
- SafeKids has no servers of its own and doesn't ask you to create an account.
- Your family's data stays on your devices and in your iCloud, run by Apple. The developer can't access it.
- No ads, no tracking, no analytics or third-party tools.
- Your child's photos never leave their device, and app usage time stays there too.
- The child can always see in the app what is shared with their parents.
1. Who is responsible
The app is developed by Domenico Pace, email support@safekids.it ("the developer").
The developer is responsible only for data it receives directly, for example when you write for support (section 8). It doesn't receive, store or read the data the app manages for your family: that data is kept on your devices and in your iCloud account, under your control.
2. How SafeKids works
The parent installs SafeKids on their own device and on the child's, and connects them with an invitation (QR code or link). The rules set by the parent and the information sent by the child's device travel through Apple's iCloud (CloudKit service):
- the data is stored in the private iCloud database of the parent who added the child;
- it is shared, through iCloud sharing, only with the child's device and with other parents the parent has invited;
- Apple protects transmission and storage with encryption.
The control features (app blocking, time limits, web filter, restrictions) use Apple's Screen Time interfaces (Family Controls, Managed Settings, Device Activity) and are enforced directly by iOS on the child's device.
3. What data the app uses
| Data | Purpose | Where it is | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Child's name, as entered by the parent | Recognize the child in the app | Family devices and the parent's iCloud | Connected parents and the child's device |
| Rules: mode, time slots, daily limit, blocked websites, restrictions, zones (name, point on the map and radius) | Apply the rules on the child's device | Family devices and the parent's iCloud | Connected parents and the child's device |
| Parent PIN | Protect the settings on the child's device | Only as a non-reversible hash, never in plain text | Nobody can read the PIN |
| Status of the child's device: Screen Time authorization, active blocks, number (not the list) of limited apps and websites, last connection, any setup issues | Show the parent whether the rules are working | The parent's iCloud | Connected parents |
| Anonymous identifier of the child's iCloud account, provided by Apple, which doesn't reveal name or email | Prevent the child's phone from being connected as a parent by mistake | The parent's iCloud | Only the app, it isn't displayed |
| Child's location: last location with accuracy and time, route over the last 7 days, arrivals at and departures from zones. Only if the parent turns on "Share location" | Show where the child is and alert the parent | The child's device and the parent's iCloud | Connected parents and the child, who always sees that location is shared |
| Requests for more time and the parent's answers | Let the child ask for extra time | Family devices and the parent's iCloud | Connected parents and the child's device |
| Photo alerts: date and number of new photos with possible nudity. Only if the parent turns on the feature | Alert the parent | The child's device and the parent's iCloud | Connected parents. Photos are never sent or shown |
Data that stays only on the child's device
- Photos. New photos are analyzed on the device with Apple's sensitive content technology (SensitiveContentAnalysis). No image, thumbnail or reference to the photos leaves the device.
- Usage time and apps used. They are calculated by iOS and shown only on the child's device. The apps chosen by the parent are identified by codes provided by Apple, which don't reveal which apps they are.
- Web browsing. The website filter is applied by iOS. SafeKids doesn't read or record the websites visited.
Data SafeKids doesn't use
SafeKids doesn't read messages, calls, contacts, email, browsing history or app content. It doesn't use ads, doesn't profile users, doesn't sell or share data and contains no analytics tools or third-party libraries.
4. Permissions requested
- Screen Time (Family Controls): on the child's device, to apply blocks, limits and restrictions.
- Location ("Always"): on the child's device, only if the parent turns on location sharing. It's also needed when the app is closed, for zone arrival and departure alerts.
- Photos: on the child's device, only if the parent turns on photo alerts.
- Camera: to scan the invitation QR code. Images aren't saved.
- Notifications: for alerts to the parent and confirmations on the child's device.
- Network filter: on the child's device, only to block internet when the parent asks. It doesn't inspect or record traffic.
Every permission can be revoked at any time in iOS Settings. The parent gets an alert if a needed permission is removed.
5. Children
SafeKids is meant for parents and legal guardians, who use it to guide their minor children in using their devices. Whoever installs the app on a minor's device states they are entitled to do so.
The app is designed to be transparent with the child: on their device it always shows the active rules and what is shared with the parents (location and photo check). We recommend talking about it with your children, especially teenagers, and adapting the rules to their age.
The parent's processing of the child's data within the family is for personal and household purposes (Article 2(2)(c) GDPR). The developer doesn't process this data for its own purposes and has no access to it. The developer doesn't collect personal information from children, including under the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
6. How long data is kept
- Route: the last 7 days. Older points are deleted automatically.
- Zone arrivals and departures, photo alerts: the last 30 events.
- Last location and device status: each update replaces the previous one.
- Location turned off: when the parent turns off location sharing, the route is deleted.
- Child removed: when the parent who added the child removes them, all their data is deleted from iCloud for every connected device.
- App deleted: data saved on the device is deleted by iOS. Data in iCloud stays until the child is removed in the parent's app. It can also be deleted in Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Storage → SafeKids.
7. iCloud and Apple
Data storage and sync are provided by Apple through iCloud, under the iCloud terms and Apple's privacy policy. Apple processes this data as the provider of the iCloud service chosen by the user. The space SafeKids uses, a few kilobytes, counts toward the parent's iCloud storage.
The app purchase and payments are handled by Apple through the App Store. The developer doesn't receive your payment details.
8. If you write to the developer
If you contact the developer for support, the data you send (email address, name and message content) is used only to answer you. The legal basis is your request (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR). It is kept for as long as needed to handle it, and no longer than 24 months, and isn't shared with third parties. Please don't send unnecessary data about your child, such as photos or locations.
9. Your rights
You can ask the developer for access, rectification, erasure, restriction or portability of the data about you that it processes, and object to processing (Articles 15-22 GDPR), by writing to support@safekids.it. Residents of other countries have the rights granted by their local law and can exercise them the same way. Your family's data managed by the app is already under your control: you can view, change and delete it directly in the app or in iCloud.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority, in Italy the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, or the authority of your country.
10. Changes to this policy
If the way the app handles data changes, this page is updated and the date at the top changed. Important changes are also mentioned in the app's release notes on the App Store.
